THE FOUR OF us—Frankie, Leo, Mario, and I—gathered in a large van outside of the Irving Trust Company uptown. The first bank heist for all of us. This wasn’t breaking into a jewelry store in the middle of the night and stealing some ice. It was thieving out in the open for all to see, with little time to think. One stupid mistake was all it took for you to spend the rest of your life in jail. I went over the plan with the three guys multiple times. Carl had spent weeks giving me a detailed rundown, and I passed along that same information. Johnny Boy and Mickey were anxiously waiting at a safe house for confirmation that we were done. There was a lot riding on this thing going down smoothly. Getting pinched would be bad enough, but we’d be bringing federal heat onto the other families. That could easily start a war. Still, the reward outweighed the risk.

Three bank tellers, one bank manager, and one crooked guard would all be inside. Just after 9:30 a.m. was the earliest we could go; that was when the two cash transporters left. Those fellas were combat trained and carried fully loaded rifles. We would’ve been forced to put them down as cleanly as possible. Pulling a trigger would be an option only if the situation became desperate enough. We wore bullet vests in case one of the customers was armed and felt like being a hero. The bank wouldn’t be busy because it was early. Our plan depended on low customer traffic. Mario would wait in the car and drive us out of there before the heat arrived. Frankie would be responsible for crowd control and keeping heads down. Leo and I would load up the cash from the safe. One of my priorities was to keep Leo away from the civilians.

Before we went in, I made sure everyone understood what we were about to do and how we’d do it. “We all clear on this thing, then?”

Leo was eager. “Anth, we’ve been over it about a hundred times. Let’s just do this shit already.”

Frankie agreed with Leo for once. “Yeah, honestly, I just wanna fucking get in there and get it done.”

“All right, all right. Just stick to what we planned and let’s get outta there. Mario, you okay?”

“Yeah.”

“You don’t move this van no matter what. And you keep it running. Understand?”

“I’ll be sitting tight.”

“All right, let’s go.”

The three of us hopped out of the van and burst into the bank. It all happened so fast.

Gun in hand, Frankie made our intentions clear to the five customers and five staff. “All right, everybody on the fucking ground! You listen to what I fucking say and maybe nobody gets shot! That’s up to you!”

The security guard, Carl’s cousin, ran out with his gun pointed at us. “Drop your weapons!”

I played along with him. “Whoa, whoa. Easy, pal. You really wanna be the reason somebody dies here today?”

The plan had been for me to tackle Carl’s cousin to the ground and give him a couple light punches.
